Dr. Memel is the Managing Director of Klaipeda Health, a healthcare and life sciences advisory services company, and a Senior Fellow at the Healthcare Innovation and Technology Lab in New York City. He has over 25 years of experience spanning U.S. and global pharmaceutical, diagnostics, payor and provider organizations. He is skilled in traversing the intersection of medicine, science, business and technology; and is an expert in the strategic use of information to accelerate research, improve healthcare and drive business value. David has held a variety of commercial, medical, scientific, informatics and technology leadership positions at companies including Boehringer Ingelheim Pharmaceuticals. Prior to joining BI, Dr. Memel’s positions included Chief Medical Officer and Senior Vice President of Analytics for LifeCare, Inc., Head of Informatics for Aetna, Inc., Global Chief Medical Officer for Roche Professional Diagnostics, Director of Medical Data Management and Analytics and Director of Health Economics and Outcomes Research for Roche Pharmaceuticals, and Vice-President of Information Management and Quality Improvement for PeaceHealth, a multi-state integrated delivery system. Dr. Memel is a pioneering, collaborative and results-driven leader dedicated to transforming healthcare. His command of the complexities of the evolving value-based healthcare landscape, and his holistic approach to delivering solutions by integrating business, medical, scientific, health informatics and digital health insights have earned him a reputation as a champion for improving the health of populations, reducing the cost of care and improving the patient experience.
He began as a diagnostic and interventional radiologist practicing in US and European academic medical centers. In the course of his career, David has made significant contributions to development and commercialization of over 20 pharmaceutical and diagnostic products; led development and operationalization of a variety of healthcare and life sciences technology, analytics and evidence-based services and solutions; and built and led nearly a dozen high-performing teams delivering new capabilities and value to the businesses.
He received his BS and MD from the University of California at Los Angeles, his MS in Medical Informatics from the University of Utah School of Medicine, and his MBA from Cornell University and Queen’s University. Dr. Memel also completed a Fellowship in Clinical Effectiveness Research at the Harvard School of Public Health.
