Dr. Tawfik received his Doctorate of Medicine from the Faculty of Medicine at Cairo University, Egypt in 1978 and his Doctorate of Philosophy in Pathology from the University of Kansas School of Medicine in 1987. He completed his Anatomical and Clinical Pathology residency training and postdoctoral fellowship at the University of Kansas Medical Center. He is certified by the American Board of Pathology in anatomic and clinical pathology and has received a Board Diplomate in Cytopathology. Dr Tawfik is currently the Vice Chairman for Education and Outreach, Director of Anatomical and Surgical Pathology and a tenured Professor of Pathology and Laboratory Medicine and Obstetrics and Gynecology at the University of Kansas Medical Center. Dr. Tawfik provides clinical services in General Surgical Pathology, Cytopathology and Fine Needle Aspiration Pathology with special expertise in gynecologic, breast and lung pathology. He is active in research on tumor biomarkers, image analysis and digital pathology. He has a patened process which utilizes high resolution scaning and remote reading via the Internet of PAP smears for detection of HPV and cervical cancer to women in remote and developing countries.
